Here’s the Lakota Country Times story:

Allen-Hawkins Family Reunion Held at Fort Robinson

Born in Indiana on September 10, 1851 Charles Wesley Allen led a colorful life on the western frontier.  As a young man he joined the ranks of the Kansas State Troopers, 2nd Battalion, Company B.  In 1872, while working as a freighter for the Cuny and Ecoffey Freighting and Contracting Company near Fort Laramie, he met and married a 17 year old Lakota woman, Emma Hawkins.  Emma’s last name was anglicized from Hockenstrasser.  The couple were married for over 50 years and had 12 children: Nellie Allen Means, Joseph Perry Allen, Alma Allen Provost, Sophia Allen Russell, Charles Sumner Allen, Samuel Emmitt Allen, Jessie Allen Vierling, Lizzie Allen Carlow, Robert Cleveland Allen, and Julia Allen Vert (Albert and Edgar died in infancy).  The Allens spent time in what is now Wyoming, Nebraska, and South Dakota where Charles worked as cowboy, newspaper reporter at the Chadron Democrat, Pine Ridge Postmaster, and Allen Trading Post owner.  He founded the Martin Messenger newspaper in 1912 and authored From Fort Laramie To Wounded Knee, In the West That Was and Autobiography of Red Cloud, War Leader of the Oglalas, both books published posthumously in 1997.

Descendants of Charles and Emma meet every two years in celebration of an extended family that began over 136 years ago.  The 2008 Allen-Hawkins family reunion was held on July 26 & 27 at Fort Robinson, Nebraska in the Buffalo Soldier Barracks Meeting Room.  About 100 family members from across the country enjoyed food, fun, and renewing family kinship.  Linda Reed-Taylor of Rio Rancho, New Mexico, great granddaughter of Joseph & Rosanna (Rooks) Allen was the organizer for this year’s event.
